2007 Race Rules

SUNDAY AUGUST 26, 2007   START: Mass Start  7:00 a.m.  (sharp)

LOCATION:  62 BALDWIN AVENUE, PAIA, MAUI, HAWAII

 

  1. Mandatory Carbo Load / Pre-race mtg to be held on Sat. Aug. 25th, 2007 at the Paia Community Ctr starting at 5:00pm.

 

  1. All cyclists must arrive one hour prior to the start on race morning for check-in and body marking.

 

  1. Beware - the entire race course is open to normal vehicle traffic.   Riders must obey all traffic rules and laws.  Riders must yield to motorists at all times and must ride single file on the right side of the road.  Bicycle safety on the road is your responsibility.  Be predictable, alert and be responsible.  The Maui County Police Department will assist at key intersections along the highway.

 

  1. The course route is as follows:  Start in Paia Town (62 Baldwin Ave) – Up Baldwin Ave. to Makawao town – Straight on Olinda Road at the 4-way stop - Right on Hanamanu Road –- Bear left onto Kealaloa Avenue – Left onto Old Haleakala Highway – Left onto Crater Road – Straight up to Haleakala Summit.  Off-road travel is prohibited.  No cutting across the inside of corners.

 

  1. Please do not litter!    Empty bike bottles, wrappers, trash, etc must be discarded only at the designated aid stations.   Riders violating this rule will be disqualified.

 

  1. Riders are required to wear a helmet and have their race number on their bike at all times.  Riders are responsible for the condition and safety of their bikes and must be prepared to make their own repairs. 

 

  1. Cyclists may have their own support prior to entering the National Park but hand offs can only be made at the designated aid stations.  Receiving support outside the designated aid stations is grounds for disqualification.   Upon entering the National Park, no outside support or escort vehicles are allowed.  Once in the Park, the designated aid stations will provide any and all aid.

 

  1. Aid Stations (A.S.) are the only places where riders can receive aid. #1 A.S. – Old Haleakala Hwy just beyond mile marker (mm) 3 (11 miles into the race); #2 A.S. – 4,000’ Elev. @ mm 1.8 on Crater Road (15.8 miles into the race);  #3 A.S. - 5000’ Elev. @ mm 5.2 on Crater Rd (19.2 miles into the race);   #4 A.S. –  6500’ Elev. @  mm 9.5 on Crater Rd. (23.5 miles into the race).  #5 A.S. – 8000’ Elevation @ mm 14.7 on Crater Rd. (28.7 miles into the race);  #6 A.S. – Leleiwi parking area at 9000’ Elev. @ mm 17.4 on Crater Road (31.4 miles into the race);   #7 – Finish Line @ the summit of Haleakala (36 miles into the race).  Aid stations will provide water, HEED sport drink, fruit, sports bars, and Hammer Gel. 

 

  1. Cyclists will not be required to stop at the Stop Sign at the National Park entrance station, unless directed to do so by park personnel or race officials.

 

  1. CUT-OFF TIMES WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED: All cyclists who have not reached the 6500’ elev. Aid Station by 11:30 am. or the summit finish line by 1:30pm. will be disqualified and will be required to surrender their race number.  At this point these riders are no longer officially part of the race.  If you chose to continue on your own, you will be responsible for the following:  $5.00 entry fee into the National Park, aid, and transportation down the mountain.  By continuing, you assume total responsibility for your own support.

 

  1. Riders who decide to discontinue the race (for any reason) must notify race officials or the nearest aid station.

 

  1. All support vehicles must park in the lower visitor parking lot (approximately Ύ mile below the summit).  Shuttle vans will be available for transport to the summit finish area.  No vehicle parking is allowed at the Summit or on Spur Road (as was allowed in past years).  Note: all support vehicles need to pay their own park entry fee ($10).

 

  1. Participants are not allowed to ride down from the summit of Haleakala.  Please arrange for your own transportation down the mountain if possible.  Alternatively, shuttles will be provided to transport cyclists and their bikes back to Paia Town.

 

  1. Violation of any of these rules will lead to disqualification, removal from the course, and possible suspension from future events.

 

  1. A post race party sponsored by Outback Steak House with food and prizes will be held after the race starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Paia Community Center.
